Anger Management Medication

Anger management medication should be the very last choice for a person who faces anger issue.

Before choosing this method, it is advised to have fully understand of the circumstances of accepting this method and know the pro and cons of it as compared with other treatment method.

Eventually, there are no exact medicines that are designed to treat anger issues. Anger management medication are meant to alleviate stress, anxiety and depressions that are often the tendency beforehand causes by the effects of anger. 

The common anti-depressant available in the market related to the symptoms of angers are Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa and Effexor. These types of medicines are concluded into one category, known as Selective Seronin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). SSRI functions as inhibitors to block the reuptake of serotonin, hence leaving more serotonin in the brain which then enhances the neurotransmitter to trigger the nerve impulse.

Upon triggering, the mood will be improved, and reduces the incident of anger outburst. However, it does not prevent anger outburst completely. 

Although SSRI is useful is preventing anger outburst, at the meantime, there are severe side effects of taking this type medicines.  Typical effects include diarrhea, drowsiness and dry mouth, excessive sweating, sexual dysfunctions and also weight gain. 

The most severe potential side effect will be serotonin syndrome. It normally occurs only if the patients take several prescriptions at once, such as taking anti-depressants, pain relief medications at once.

This syndrome may gravitate to hallucination, seizures, drug induced coma and even worsen the symptoms of depression hence increase the chances of suicidal thoughts, especially for young adults in the age of 18 to 24.

Besides SSRI, another form of anger management medication will be Tricyclic anti-depressants (TCAs). Similar to SSRI, they too deal with neurotransmitter. The medicines under the category of TCAs will be amitriptyline, Amoxapine and Norpramin. 

These medicines induce their own side effect, but some are still similar to SSRI. They can cause blurred vision, constipation, disorientation, confusion, low blood pressure, increased appetite, increase heart rate and etc. In addition, TCAs can increase the risk on heart attack, lowered blood sugar levels, and further worsen depression which increases suicidal thoughts.
 
There are various forms of techniques and tips to manage your anger other than anger management medication. Choices available include anger management exercise and anger therapy.

Anger management medication is not the only choice, as the effect of it may cause severe effect on the patient itself.
